The History of the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre
In 1949 the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada,Winnipeg Section, established the first drop-in seniors centre in Canada. This centre was called the Golden Age Club and was intended to enhance the quality of life and community participation of seniors in the area. After many years of operation on a part-time basis, the Golden Age Club moved to a full-time facility at 410 Pritchard Avenue in 1965. Unfortunately, the centre's location became unsuitable, and in 1986 a new home was found at 1588 Main Street. This new building was named the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre in honour of Gwen Secter, an active member of the organization.
